Strange and Unusual: Cemetery Headstones Part 2

Happy February 1st!

If you read part 1 of my Interesting/Unique Headstones, now it's time for part 2. I hope you don't mind, I won't be going to any cemeteries in person until the weather is decent. But I have some more virtual tours instead! Today I am adding some interesting cemeteries/graveyards.

Also a big source credit to Stone Angels Project they are actually a local organization that works on repairing old/damaged headstones. I was on their Facebook page and they had most of these so I did more research.

Naomi Miller-Dawson

Born 1921 Died 2009 (her dates were hard to read)

Location : Green-wood Cemetery Brooklyn, NY

Why is her headstone unique: On the top is a recipe for Spritz Cookies (the headstone looks like a cook book). How awesome is that? Spritz cookies are popular around Christmas time. My impression is that she was known for the cookies and her family wanted to share the love as it were!

First Church of Christ, New Haven CT

Why is this apart of my list? Because of the The Crypt built on top of the church. So it's an indoor cemetery. Yes you that read right. Somehow I was suggested a You Tube video (if I remember correctly) about this location.

Interesting facts: They are 137 identified remains in the crypt however they are over 1,000 unidentified remains.

Benedict Arnold's 1st Wife Margaret Arnold final resting place is there.

President Rutherford B. Hayes grandmother and aunt are buried there

Oldest headstone: Sarah Rutherford Trowbridge dating back to 1687!!

The headstones despite being old look well persevered.

Unfornately due to Covid, the crypt is closed until further notice.

Here's the video

Vivian May Anderson Allison

1894-1899 she was only 6 years old when she died

Location: Connersville, Indiana

Why is her headstone unique: It's a dollhouse literally you can actually see inside of it!!

Vivian's parents struck with grief her father was building the dollhouse to give her for Christmas but instead it was built on top of her marker. According to my research, another cemetery in Indiana has another doll house marker!

Susan B. Anthony

Born February 15, 1820

Died March 13, 1906

Claim to fame: Women's suffrage, Women's Right and Abolitionism

Location: Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, NY

Why her headstone is unique: During election day voters flock to Anthony's headstone to place their "I Voted" sticker upon it. However it's considered desecration because of a family gravestone and it's private property. Plus her headstone is so old the cemetery owners were concerned

It's a great gesture 100% but they want to perverse the headstone. So they place a plastic covering on her headstone. You can read the CNN article here. I'm sure she'd be happy how this year's election turned out!!

The Smallest graveyard

Location: Warwick, Rhode Island

It is a single grave of Thomas C. Matteson which is buried between driveways of St. Rose church and rectory  on Inman Avenue. According my research, he served on the 12th infantry (union) during the civil war. His enlistment date was October 6, 1862. He was discharged (what they called a disability discharged) in March 26, 1863 he was diagnosed with smallpox. A month later he died April 24, 1863.

There's not much more information on Thomas. Mainly that it stated he didn't know how to spell his name and relied on others to help him. They also at the time buried him in a field because the fear of catching smallpox.

Last but not least shout to Hollywood Graveyard for this video. This was in there viewer's special #1 and if you forward to the 15:59 mark there's the clip

Sandra West Born 1940 Died March 10, 1977 location: San Antonio, Texas Sunset Memorial Park

Claim to fame: Texas socialite

Why is her grave unique? Because of her request. West wanted to be buried in her Ferrari. You read that right. Her wish was honored. West sadly died after being hospitalized for a traffic accident and according to her autopsy she somehow overdosed.

West was buried in her nightie, seated in her Ferrari and then it was encased in concrete. The burial was March 19, 1977 not many family was present at her burial but a lot of on lookers. It's a very large plot obviously.

It's a popular tourist attractions
